USATT CEO Virginia Sung Reflects on First 6 Months in Office

Novemember 18, 2019

To the USA Table Tennis community:

Now that I have reached the six months mark of my tenure at USA Table Tennis, I would like to take a moment to share with you the progress our team has made. First, I want to thank all of you for the support, encouragement, and candid advice. I also want to thank the staff and support team for working tirelessly to navigate the challenges and come out with greater strength and determination...

...Our media presence has continued to grow and to focus on producing a larger ratio of original content. We have decided to drastically reduce the quantity of links to outside content, focusing instead on activities within the USA and involving USA athletes. We have also focused more on clubs, members, college table tennis, and para players.

We are performing exceptionally well with web traffic, and in the past six months, we have experienced the following social media platform gains:
- Facebook: +2000 followers
(Pingpong Diplomacy Event: George Braithwaite vs. Xu Xin: 2.9 million video views, China/USA Joint Training Camp: Lily Training with Chinese National Team athlete: 3.8 million video views)
- YouTube: +1700 subscribers, + 1 Million views
- Instagram: + 1500 followers, moving just shy of 10,000 approx
- Twitter: +500 followers...

...Highlights of Team USA Results:

- Amy Wang, World #1 Ranked Junior Girl
- Kanak Jha, World #22 Ranked Mens
- Pan Am Games, Men's Team Gold Medal
- Pan Am Championships, Four Gold Medals (Lily Zhang)
- North American Olympic Team Trials: USA vs. CANADA, (Men – 3-0, Women – 3-0)
- World Singles Cup (Women) - Lily Zhang (4th place),  Best US Finish in History, Nominated for 2019 ITTF Breakthrough Star and Star Point Awards
- World Team Cup, USOPC Operation Gold Team Award (Men’s Team (Jha, Feng, Zhang) – 5th position, Women’s Team (Zhang, Wu, Wang) – 5th position...

...Even with all of these accomplishments, a lot more still needs to be done and further improvements need to be made. We are still far away from the podium, far away from being excellent as an organization, and far away from providing our athletes with all necessary resources to sustain excellence. But I am confident we will get there with our collective wisdom and effort. As an old African proverb says, “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Together, we will build an organization that we will all be proud of; we will go far and strong.

Thank you for being part of this great journey with USATT!

USA Upset Sweden to Advance at 2019 World Team Cup

November 6, 2019

It was a day of pressure for the US Men's team as they stepped up to the table to defend their place in the 2019 ZEN-NOH ITTF World Team Cup in Tokyo, Japan. Only a victory against Sweden would allow them to pass into the quarterfinal stages of the competition, after both teams had suffered losses to top group seed South Korea.

The setting of Tokyo, as an Olympic Test Event, set the bar even higher. Flashbacks of the US Men facing Sweden in the first round of the team event at the 2016 Rio Olympics set the scene for what would be a fairytale reversal.

In Rio the Swedish team had convincingly won 3-0, but this match 3 years on showed the growth of the US team, and its leading player - Kanak Jha...

...Following in footsteps of England, who just a day earlier had upset the home team, Japan, the USA delivered.

Reversing the result of the 2016 Rio Games three years ago, the USA defeated Sweden in the deciding match and will advance to the quarterfinal of the World Team Cup!

Congratulations to Kanak Jha, Kai Zhang, Tom Feng and Coach Gao Jun!

Health Benefits of Playing Table Tennis

Table tennis is the most popular racket sport in the world. It is a sport that can be enjoyed by individuals of any age and physical ability. There are over 20 million play table tennis recreationally in the US alone. Top table tennis players are some of the greatest athletes in the world, yet this sport is enjoyed by millions of disabled persons and folks in retirement homes. Playing table tennis is a great way to stimulate the brain and promote quick thinking while improving our body coordination. Let’s see how this popular sport benefits our health!

Improve Visual Sensitivity

When playing table tennis, both players should keep observing the swinging ball back and force at high speed. Their eye ciliary muscle would be driven to contract and relax continuously at a certain pace, which can promote the eyeball tissue blood circulation effectively, thus improving the ciliary muscle function as a result. To keep table tennis as a long-term exercise on table tennis can help increase both the visual sensitivity and the response ability of human eyes. Especially for those who have their eyes overused, if they can insist on playing table tennis, their visual sensitivity will get significantly improved.

Strengthen Body function

Just as tennis, badminton and basketball, table tennis is also a physical strength based sport. When playing this game, physical strength accounts for 60% while another 40% depends on proper technical approaches. Therefore, playing table tennis can increase one's agility and flexibility, making players react much faster. Even it is cold outside, table tennis players will sweat easily after an intensive game, which help promote the metabolism and maintain the balance of our body, improve our body function and prevent us from getting cardiovascular disease effectively.

Keeping Fit

Table tennis can help people keep fit effectively. When playing table tennis, the player need to pick up the ball and catch the ball continuously, keeping one’s wrist swinging and one’s arm gripping all the time, which give fully exercise to our ankle, knee and hip joints, both our gross and fine muscle movements thus get improved. Especially when played at an intense rate, this game can be a great way to burn calories and lose weight. A 150-pound person can burn 272 calories by playing table tennis for an hour.

Low-injury Risk

Although certain strength is needed, table tennis is also a low-injury risk sport. It help people build our body strength, speed and quickness and flexibility without adding severe stress on our joints. Those who had knee surgery, back problems or ankle ache should try table tennis to improve their leg, arm and core strength without overtaxing their joints.

Keep Brain Sharp

Table tennis can develop mental acuity. During table tennis exercise or competition, people should concentrate on their tactical strategies regarding the speed, spin and placement of the ball, while taking initiation all the time.

Playing table tennis stimulates various different parts of the brain to improve mental alertness, which makes it the perfect game for young people to sharpen reflexes and for older people to refine tactics. Especially the aerobic exercise from the physical activity of the game stimulates the hippocampus, the part of the brain that is responsible for allowing us to form and retain long-term facts and events.

Family Sport

Table tennis is also the kind of sports that can be played at home and with family members to bring family members closer and enable them to spend more leisure time together. The family participants playing table tennis can range in age from 8 to 80. The game really helps create a great situation for young people to interact with the older generation.

ITTF:

2021 Preview: Top three female athletes with a point to prove

29 Dec 2020

In a few days, the New Year will be upon us and the sport of table tennis will see the continued growth of top female athletes.

Question is, who has a point to prove in 2021?

Lily Zhang

Captain of the ITTF World Professionals team competing at the Chinese Super League, Lily Zhang has made a name for herself over the past 15 months. The American athlete has showcased top drawer performances in consecutive Women’s World Cup tournaments and also the first edition of the World Table Tennis event in Macao.

Her attacking playing style is tough to counter for most opponents, and while her world ranking is currently at 30 – it is by no means an indicator of her immense talent. The next step for Zhang will be an all important World Tour victory and further appearances in latter stages of the world competitions – maybe even the Tokyo Olympics!

Mima Ito

Always the shining star from the land of the rising Sun, Mima Ito saw her rise to world no.2 in 2020 and rightly so. Winner of the bronze medal at the Dishang 2020 Women’s World Cup and gold at the 2020 ITTF World Tour Hungarian Open, there is no shortage for silverware for the Japanese.

Video cameras rolling, opponents and coaches studying her play; could maintaining her present status and challenging for the top spot on the world rankings prove her most difficult task of all?  Recently she swapped places with Sun Yingsha in the most recent World Rankings. Ito’s ambition for 2021 will most certainly be regain that spot – and even challenge for the elusive world no.1.

Ding Ning

The Queen of Hearts has not had the best of times this past year, and in part that has been down to the missing opportunities and injury troubles. Ding Ning has seen a slight change in her ranking in the most recent release, finding herself up to world no.5.

A silver medal in Hungary earlier in 2020 was followed by her semi-final finish in Qatar, after which her persistent health issues kept her away from action. When she was able to compete again at WTT Macao, there were glimpses of her form that made her the Olympic Champion in 2016. Given that the time is coming for her to defend her title, will Ding begin 2021 with a vengeance?
